A concept based on service
Credit unions were first formed in England at the beginning of the 19th century. As is the case today, they were created not for profit but to serve members as credit cooperatives. They quickly became very popular in Europe, where residents of rural villages, unable to obtain loans at reasonable rates, banded together to pool savings to lend each other. By the mid-1800s, they became known as the “people’s bank.”
At the turn of the 20th century, the credit union concept became popular in Quebec in response to the outrageous interest rates being charged by loan sharks. There, people join forces to form credit unions offering financial relief to the working class.
The movement spread to the United States with the formation of the first credit union in New Hampshire in 1909. By the 1920s, credit unions were being created to meet the growing need for inexpensive consumer credit.
More people join credit unions every year because they receive superior service. According to the American Banker Newspaper’s annual customer satisfaction survey, credit unions have rated No. 1 in customer satisfaction at financial institutions for 10 years.
